Penn State has two significant problems. In the first, an FBI investigation of their coaching staff showed that years of child molesting had been covered up for years.
Exposing the child molesting, and the child molester so far identified, caused the school to go through the usual “reexamining”. Frankly, most of those associated with the school just wanted the problem to go away before funding was threatened.
A second problem surfaced along with the perversion and pedophilia. There is, at Penn State, a person the school regards as a respected scientist, Dr. Michael Mann.
He is the inventor of “The Hockey Stick”, a diagram that was able to ignore the warm periods in both Roman and Middle Ages to “prove” that human activity was causing rapid increases in Global Warming. Statisticians have shown that any figures used in Mann’s mathematical formulas will generate a hockey-stick shape graph.
Some have alleged that Dr. Michael Mann has developed a fraud in order to get funding from a government desperate to find a new Imaginary Problem to use as an excuse for taxing and regulating. The Attorney General of Virginia is trying to get the University in that State, where Michael Mann previously worked, to disgorge his work papers.
That University, using the excuse of defending “academic integrity”, is refusing to let investigators see if there is integrity in the academy.
Penn State, now stuck with a molester and covering for the molester, is also stuck with Michael Mann and Penn State’s previous investigation of Michael Mann. That perfunctory investigation was widely acclaimed to be a whitewash, in which Dr. Mann’s colleagues absolved him of wrongdoing. So, Penn State has two significant problems.
Who knows what more dirt has been swept under the many, many rugs of its many, many offices.
But, it is a state institution. Too much investigation will threaten funding. So, there won’t be too much investigation. Unless, someone drops a big shoe. Then, the fact that Penn State has two significant problems may be the beginning of the end.
