Bathed in Light from the Heart of Christ
When most people see an image of the Divine Mercy, they notice the red and white rays flowing outward. These represent the mercy and grace pouring from the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Yet Catholics see more. We imagine ourselves standing just an inch tall before the crucified Christ. From that lowly vantage, we gaze upward—straight into the heart-shaped light that flows from the wound opened by St. Longinus’ spear.
This light, streaming from the pierced Heart of Jesus, shines not just toward us, but through Him. We are invited to stand in awe and be illumined. As we look into the rays, we glimpse what our eyes cannot fully grasp: the glory of God the Father shining through His Son.
Our Prayers Pass Through the Son to the Father
Christ’s pierced Heart is not only a fountain of mercy. It is the gateway through which our prayers rise. When we recite the second prayer of a daily Novena, we ask: “I humbly and urgently ask Your Father in Your Name that my prayer be granted.”
By shrinking ourselves in spirit and stepping close to Jesus, we see clearly: our prayer goes through Him. He is our intercessor, our high priest. As Scripture declares, “For through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.” (Ephesians 2:18) (Christ is the divine mediator.)
Through this divine wound, our voice is carried upward. Light flows down; our petitions rise up. That is the sacred exchange Catholics are blessed to understand.
Only in the Church Do We See the Full Picture
Only those formed by Catholic teaching grasp this profound view. Others may admire the art—but Catholics know what it means. Jesus did not merely die for us—He opened a living channel between heaven and earth.
As the Catechism explains, “The Church is the place where humanity must rediscover its unity and salvation.” (CCC 845)
And Jesus promises: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) (Christ is the sole path to God.)
What joy it is to be Catholic—and to see with eyes of faith what others miss.
