One of the things that inspired him to become Catholic 45 years ago was the conversion of the famous American showman, Buffalo Bill Cody, to Catholicism.
Two days before he died in 1917 at the age of 70, Buffalo Bill became Catholic. Two days! That was a close call!
More than ten years ago, Butler County ordered that every long driveway have a name so emergency vehicles could find it. I was so grateful for Buffalo Bill’s example that I named the half-mile driveway to my house in the middle of farm fields: “The Buffalo Bill Cody Memorial Highway”.
In all of North America, the odds of a person doing that are about 1 in 350,000,000.

Part 2: Recently, my furnace had to be replaced. When telephoning a young lady from a nearby heating company, she slowly read my address, “The Buffalo Bill Cody Memorial Highway” out loud. She said in astonishment: “I am Buffalo Bill Cody’s great, great, great granddaughter! I grew up looking at a beautiful painting of him in my mother’s house!”
What are the odds that any of us would have a conversation with one of the possibly 10 living Cody descendants? The odds of that happening to anyone: 10 in 350,000,000, or one chance in 35,000,000.
The odds of Buffalo Bill’s great-great-great-granddaughter talking to the one person in North America whose driveway is named “The Buffalo Bill Cody Memorial Highway” is one in 350,000,000 multiplied by 35,000,000. The odds against that happening are 12,250,000,000,000,000,000 to 1. That is 12,250,000 trillion, or 12 million 250 thousand trillion to 1.
Hopefully, we will all have more than two days remaining to fully appreciate that Miracle in Butler County. May God bless us all to be as Catholic as we can while we have more than two days left on earth!
