The Coming Darkness

The last few days have been depressing. As many of us, I dread the coming darkness of Daylight Savings Time. The depression that comes from recognizing that there is no way to stop the government from its high-handed theft of one hour of usable daylight from hundreds of millions of us has thrown a pall over my thoughts.

The only cheerful thing about it? It’s not as bad as it could be. Once, a government expert suggested that we turn our clocks back two hours. While that idea was received enthusiastically by the growing fringe whose manic membership applauds every attack on comfort, consistency, and rational thought, saner heads prevailed. The government expert was, in all likelihood, promoted, and now runs one of the many agencies devoted to hectoring us about using too much food and energy.

That’s of little solace to us peons. We’ll soon have an entire winter of going home in the dark, with no illumination at all separating our work from our sleep.
