Busy, busy, busy.

Most of us are busy, and proud of it. “I got a lot done today. I will get a lot done tomorrow. Next week, I’m going to be even busier.” Most of our conversations with other people boil down to taking turns saying

“I did ____ “. Then, we give time for the other person or people to say “Well, I did ____ .” until it’s our turn to say “And, I did _____, too.” When busy people are talking, the “I did _____ s.” can take hours, often stretching back for decades.

Our “busyness” has one thing in common: it is horizontal. Many deal with people, other programmed entities like ourselves. Others deal with programmed entities that make and move things, like 2 x 4s and propulsion devices. No matter. Whether dealing with people or things, our activities are essentially horizontal in nature.

We spend little time dealing “upwards”. Even momentarily considering The Programmer Who programmed us, loves us, and hopes that we spend eternity with Him in joy is often put aside because we’re too busy doing things to give ourselves the opportunity to say to programmed entities like ourselves, for maybe the millionth time, “Then, I did ____.”
