The Shape of the Soul.

The Shape of the Soul. On the rare occasions that we spend a few moments wondering what our soul looks like, many of us automatically think it’s like a small ball of light. Or, in the case of those dimmed by sin, a darker ball of light.

In Catholic Fundamentalism, the soul is seen as a very miniaturized version of God. Like Him, it has the ability to program a mind and body around it, beginning at its moment of conception in its mother’s womb, later as it goes through life. It also has the ability to program the mind into an operating system based on what it believes. Also like God, each soul will go on forever. Unlike Him, each soul had a beginning, at conception, when it was downloaded into being.

We may grow from thinking our soul to be a “sphere” to seeing it like a doughnut. It is still one, but has an opening within it. Or, it may be like a coffee cup, with a hole and some depth to it. Or, like a two-handled mug. It is still one, but a more complicated shape. Then, we realize that it may have lots of loops and openings, much like a sponge, still one, but able to absorb and emit from many, many surfaces.

Then, we may consider that our soul looks just like us, a totally spiritual version of what we are. It it one, it is immortal, and it has lots of openings through which either sin or grace, or both, may enter within it and be encompassed by it.
