Vanity drives us to be big and important. Catholics have the “gentle whisper” within us. I Kings 19, 11-13 gave a sense of proportion to Elijah and to us.
The Empire State Building weighs seven hundred million pounds. The brain of the architect who designed it weighed 3 pounds. The electron flow in his 3 pound brain weighed a tiny fraction of a micro-gram. How much does a “gentle whisper” weigh?
A 40,000 pound moving van is driving down a street. A ball rolls out between two parked cars. The van driver sees the ball, realizes a child might be running out, and slams on the brakes.
What stopped the huge truck? Photons of light, weighing a billionth of a grain of talcum powder, reflected from the ball and hit the driver’s eye. Most of that light was reflected. A tiny bit of it reached the retina, raced down the optic nerve, and into the driver’s brain. Incredibly tiny connections in his mind caused an awareness of the danger. The huge truck stopped before a child could be hit.
Catholics are aware of tiny miracles. We are blessed! When we receive His Actual Body and Blood in Catholic Communion, the “gentle whisper” becomes part of us! Catholics have the “gentle whisper” within us!
