“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32) would be far more palatable to unbelievers if it didn’t connect truth and freedom with Jesus.

Sometimes, it’s helpful to reverse passages in the Operating Instructions. John could just as well have said, “You shall know the lies, and the lies will make you slaves.”

When we see how lies concerned with liberty, equality, and “helping” have been used to enslave and kill, Jesus may become a more reasonable alternative, even to the unbeliever.
