Salt and Light: What Every Catholic Must Be

Christ calls Catholics to preserve truth and shine with grace.

“You Are the Salt of the Earth”

Jesus said to His disciples, “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?” (Matthew 5:13). Salt symbolizes purity, preservation, and value. When a Catholic departs from the Faith, he becomes like salt that has lost its purpose.

As Our Lord warned, “It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” (Mt 5:13) This sobering truth applies directly to those who abandon Holy Mother Church. Without the structure of sacramental life, they become spiritually tasteless—good for nothing.

To remain “the salt of the earth,” every Catholic must stay faithful to the Eucharist, Confession, and the teachings preserved by the Church. As the Catechism affirms: “The Church is the salt of the earth. She is the light of the world.” (Catechism 782)

Consider this: disciples who remain firm in faith preserve the Church’s mission in the world. Those who abandon the Faith are left scattered and tasteless.

“You Are the Light of the World”

Then Jesus told them: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14) The Catholic Church is that city—visible, elevated, and radiant with truth.

Christ continues: “Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand.” (Mt 5:15) Every Catholic must live in the open. Hiding our faith dims the light given to us at Baptism.

As the Catechism reminds us, “By Baptism, the faithful share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission.” (CCC 1268) That light is not for ourselves alone. Jesus commands: “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Mt 5:16)

When we hide our light—by silence, cowardice, or compromise—we risk being discarded with those who are trampled underfoot. But when we shine, we guide others to the Church—the one ark of salvation.

Conclusion: Be Salt, Be Light

To reject the Catholic Faith is to discard the flavor of life and extinguish the soul’s light. But to remain Catholic—to love the Mass, keep the Commandments, and proclaim the truth—is to be salt and light in a tasteless, dark world.

Jesus doesn’t ask Catholics to become these things. He declares it: You are. That is both an identity and a responsibility.

Let every mission we undertake and every conversion we inspire serve to glorify the Father through the light that shines in us.

Today’s Simple Rhyme: “All Catholics are bright / and must share God’s light.”
