Catholics see the “Hidden Prophecy” in Today’s Reading from Amos: (#2.)

"Worldly distractions are evil attractions / that keep many souls from God."

Today’s Reading from Amos 6:1, 4-7 is his Prophecy that describes the “complacent” souls who are condemned to hell:

“Thus says The LORD, The God of hosts:  ‘Woe to the complacent in Zion!  Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall!'”  That Prophecy describes all who are not Pro-Life enough to defend unborn babies and children who are “the lambs from the flock and calves from the stall”.  They are devoured so their parents may be made to work and pay the taxes that support the “complacent”.

Amos tells us what self-centered people do instead of heeding God’s Word:  “Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own accompaniment.”  Instead of trying to “accompany” God, “They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils;”  Amos describes the lost souls whose lives become a self-serving focus that gratifies their vanities:

“yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph!”  That Prophecy identifies those who do not honor the first Joseph, who wore “the coat of many colors”.  He was sold into slavery by his brothers, miraculously became the leader of Egypt, and saved all Twelve Tribes from destruction.  That “Joseph” was a living Prophecy of the later Joseph who, like Abraham, became “Father of a (larger and Catholic) Multitude” by keeping the Son of God and Mary safe.  The world was saved by that “Joseph”, 700 years after the Prophet Amos predicted him by referring to the first “Joseph”!  Catholics make the connections!

Then, Amos tells what happens to the souls who condemn themselves by loving themselves more than God in every generation:

“Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with.” prophesies the destruction of Jerusalem and the fate of all who choose to leave God for Babylon.

Catholics see what everyone who willfully rejects The Church-Creating Word of Jesus will lose:  “And I say unto you thou art Peter and on this rock I build My Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  I give you the keys to The Kingdom of Heaven.”  May no soul be so self-serving that they reject those “keys”.
