Considering the soul as a sponge.

A sponge soaks up all manner of things. So does the soul. A sponge can soak up fresh water washing a car, or it can be used to absorb more noxious fluids. If it’s been used to pick up horribly sour milk, or something even more offensive, we may find that we simply can’t clean it out, and throw it away.

Similar spaces in our soul can either soak up errors. If the spaces within our soul absorb too many sins, the subsequent spiritual stink may become so hateful to God that He throws it away.
