Fearful governments are obsessed with keeping people off the streets.

The first government kept people off the street by inventing Public Works.  “We’ll round them up and send them off to quarry, cut, move, and stack massive piles of stones.  We will make them build a Tower to Heaven.  It’s for their own good”, announced an early government.

Interestingly, there were mountains nearby.  Their tops were closer to Heaven than any man-made tower could be.

Many complained when rounded up to be sent off to their assignments.  “The mountaintops are far, far taller than your tower, so they must be even closer to God.  If you want us to be  closer to God, why don’t we just go to the tops of the mountains?  This whole thing is a lie.” said the more intelligent.  They were told:  “You are exactly the type of person that needs to be kept off the street.  You are hereby sentenced to a lifetime at hard labor.”  Those who mentioned the lunacy were the first to be marched off in shackles and manacles.

Egyptians rounded up people and had them build pyramids.   And temples,  And obelisks.  The organizational skills developed helped their armed forces do well.

Governments in Rome kept people busy fighting in Legions and dying in various colosseums.  Romans also kept huge numbers of people busy building vast networks of roads.  “We keep them off the street by making them build new streets!”, Caesars would chortle to themselves.

In Africa’s small, tribal governments in Africa, extra people were sold into slavery and exported.

Chinese governments rounded up anyone they could, and sent them to work on endless walls.  They were impressive, but had no military value.  But, building walls was good at one thing:  Keeping people off the streets.  The Chinese also practiced widespread castration.  That minimized the number of people that had to be kept off the street.

Some nations kept undesirable people off the street by killing them.  The Khans killed as many people as they could.  Protestants in North America exterminated countless tribes of Indians.  As firearms became available to poorer people, oppressors found it was safer to focus on killing the unarmed.  Aborting helpless babies became popular, along with birth control chemicals and devices that killed the tiniest of them, almost invisibly.

It’s important to distinguish useful government programs and mindless, often murderous, make-work.   Fearful governments prefer lies and slavery to freedom.

Those who are pro-life are generally opposed to overly powerful governments.  They are often punished for such beliefs.
