As residents of London, San Francisco, and Chicago painfully discovered, big fires can wipe out vast sections of entire cities. Sometimes, as Dresden and Tokyo, massive conflagrations are caused by weapons of war in an attempt to defeat an enemy state by wiping out its people and infrastructure.
Big, intentional lies are very similar to big fires. When we see huge, blatant lies, like those that were told about the Ozone Hole, for instance, we can see that people’s jobs are being destroyed. Cunning lies were woven into endless “research” that effectively demonized freon, the inert operating substance in every cooling system. When it was made to appear sufficiently frightening, the distribution of largely harmless freon could be regulated, which made it very expensive. Manufacturers found that each can of freon that once sold for a dollar could, after enough lies about the dangers of he Ozone Hole were told, bring in over twenty dollars. Licensed, often unionized, installers got jobs “safely” putting the up-until-then harmless gas into heat exchangers. Everyone was forced to spend lots more money to keep themselves, their food, and their equipment running comfortably. All of us in mechanized societies were made poorer while a few became obscenely wealthy.
Now, when similar profiteers think up lies to raise the prices and profits of things, the internet spreads news of these new prevarications freely among all who are interested. Invariably numbered among the audience are some who actually know something about the subject. “Wait a minute!”, such experts say to themselves with some astonishment, “There’s no such thing as Global Warming, and I can prove it!” Soon, the growing groundswell of truth undermines the desire to fund another set of lies.
The bigger the lie, the more internet idealists rise to combat it. The usual channels through which the lies formerly grew and flourished have become short-circuited. It is as if fast-moving fire trucks could get to every fire before it got large enough to consume more than a wastebasket or a small dwelling. With more fire trucks, small fires are put out before they get big. With enough fire trucks freely available, there would be no more big fires.
That, of course, is why we see the inner nature of those who want to regulate the internet. The Creation Program also needs a platform from which those who chose to lie may publicly do so. The internet helps them from doing as much harm as they’d like.
