Many repeated: “Global freezing! Millions may die!”

Then, in the blinking of an eye, they were given a new, completely opposite fear. “Global warming! Millions may die!”

That was soon replaced with a newer, greater, all-encompassing, mother-of-all-frights fear-fest that they now repeat: “Climate change! Millions may die!”

Many believe that going through these remarkably rapid belief-changes is a form of rational thought. The more deluded believe that flitting from one idiocy to another indicates the possession of a lofty intellect.

A “medieval warm period” had warmer temperatures than today. Such warming periods reoccur every few hundred years, with or without internal combustion engines.

One global warming “scientist” is on record as saying “We’ve got to get rid of the medieval warm period (to make global warming seem real.)!” That desire motivated the now discredited “hockey stick” that illustrated a totally imaginary problem in a most fraudulent way. “The hockey stick! Millions may die!”, slower learners persist in repeating.

When we are faced with the newest reason that “Millions will die!” it is wise to remember the wisdom of H. L Mencken:

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them entirely imaginary.”

Plato said much the same thing about a “mindless horde” of brainless clods in a cave. They babbled endlessly about the shadows they were allowed to see on the wall. Not one of them was smart enough to turn their heads to see who made the shadows and what motives they may have had.

Those who lack the intellectual ability to “turn toward the light”, as Plato put it, may find a type of fulfillment among the shadows cast on the wall by the imaginary hobgoblins. They may grow angry if told: “They’re telling you a pack of lies. Aren’t you smart enough to know that?”

There’s always a new reason that “Millions may die!” They always translate into increased profits for the sponsor of the latest hobgoblin.
