Our mind is like a three story house.   The attic is closer to God.  “Holy thoughts” of prayer and obedience take place in the attic.  Catholic Saints spend most of their looking through the skylight in the attic.

Dark desires dwell in the lower parts of our mind.   Pride, envy, greed, gluttony, anger, lust, and sloth lurk in the basement.

When we catch ourselves thinking hurtful thoughts, our spirit has gone downstairs.  It has descended into the basement of our brain.

Most of the time, our spirit lives on the first floor,  between sainthood and sin.

We are comfortable on the first floor.  We are good, but “not too good”.  We are bad, but “not too bad”.  There are a lot of mirrors on the first floor.  We catch sight of ourselves, and say “I could be worse.”

For many, that is all the happiness they will ever know.

Angels call us to the attic.  Demons tempt us into the basement.  Our soul is drawn to the attic.  “Spirit”, it says, “Let’s go upstairs and look through the skylight.”

Our spirit replies, “I don’t want to!  I’m happy, right where I am!  Stop pestering me, soul!”

In time, our spirit may be blessed to realize:  “This house is going to collapse!  The safest place to be is in the attic!”

Our soul may lead our spirit to understand:  “If you don’t get upstairs, you will be crushed when the house collapses.  It can go at any time!  There is a skylight in the attic.  You have to open it before the house collapses or you can’t get out!”

Catholics are blessed to realize that He Who Fulfilled The Prophecies told us how to get the skylight open.

Verily, verily I say unto you thou art Peter and on this rock I build My Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I give you the keys to The Kingdom of Heaven.”
