Taxpayer distractions.

“Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl will make good on his losing bet with Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien today: Ravenstahl will be flying the Ottawa Senators flag at the City County Building while wearing a Senators jersey. ”

This is the sort of mindless silliness that we should learn to identify as “distracting taxpayers”. Most “news” is broadcast to distract taxpayers from real problems. Distracted people are not looking for ways to redirect cash flows to protect themselves.

Most cities have several TV channels. All of them broadcast virtually the same news, often showing the same stories in the same order. First, there is “news”. Then, “weather”. “Sports” follow.

Watchers think that they are kept up to date by watching the “news”. They could not be more wrong.

Any television station that said:

“Mayor Luke Ravenstahl will waste a billion taxpayer dollars building a new hockey stadium so that multi-millionaires will become billionaires. He is cheerfully ravaging the people of his city to do so. Another mayor using professional sports as an opportunity to loot taxpayers is Larry O’Brien, the mayor of Ottowa.”

would have it’s broadcasting license taken away.

That’s news to many people.
