The Simplicity of Catholic Teaching: Acts 15 and Christ’s Command

Discover how the early Church simplified the path to salvation through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and Christ's command to love.

The early Catholic Church, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, simplified the complex Mosaic Law, making the path to salvation more accessible. This pivotal moment is captured in the Acts of the Apostles, where the Apostles and presbyters convened to address the necessity of circumcision and adherence to the Mosaic Law for Gentile converts.

The Council’s Decision: Embracing Simplicity

In Acts 15:28-29, the Apostles declared:

“It is the decision of the holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities, namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right. Farewell.”

This decree reduced the 613 commandments of Jewish tradition to essential practices, emphasizing the Church’s authority to define doctrine through the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Christ’s Commandment: Love One Another

Jesus further simplified His teachings with a new commandment. In John 15:12-17, He instructed:

“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

This commandment underscores the importance of selfless love, a cornerstone of Christian life and community.

Living the Commandment: The Role of Clergy

Catholic priests and religious embody this command through vows of celibacy, obedience, and poverty, dedicating their lives to serving others and leading the faithful by example.

As Jesus stated:

“You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.” (John 15:14-15)

This relationship highlights the intimate bond between Christ and those who follow His teachings.

Unity Through Love and Obedience

The early Church’s decisions, guided by the Holy Spirit, set a precedent for unity and simplicity in faith. By focusing on essential teachings and Christ’s command to love, the Church fosters a community rooted in compassion and obedience.
