This shows the nighttime lights of cities and countries around the world. Africa is still the “dark continent”. This composite is one way to judge human activity.
The Programmer has another version that shows something far more important than candlepower. On his version, individual souls, instead of light bulbs, glow according to their faith and obedience. The brightest lights of His “global picture” burn in the Vatican, monasteries, convents, dioceses, parishes, and homes. There, the souls of the most faithful send out a light that illuminates the world.
The cities that look so bright and shining to us, from His perspective, are often the darkest. The soul of one Mother Theresa may shine more brightly than all of Thailand.
We each have the opportunity to brighten our soul so that it shows up on His view of humanity. Our eternal closeness to God depends on faith and works, our most important earthly outputs.
