The Master Bedroom. The Master Bath. Landlords.

People with new houses often mention the “master bedroom”. The phrase often occurs in, or near, the same sentence as “master bathroom”.

Those on the left are often offended. “Are the other bedrooms ‘slave bedrooms’? Are the other bathrooms ‘slave bathrooms’?”

They are similarly offended by the word “landlord”. “Are there still ‘lords of the land’?”, they mockingly wonder while asking. “Are those who rent their dwellings from landlords nothing more than serfs and peasants? Haven’t we gotten beyond all that? Don’t we need to purge our language of such retrograde ideology?”

After they’ve finished enlightening those around them with variants of such deep thoughts, sharing their beloved and righteous indignation about remnants of feudalism in our society, wealthy liberals go home. There, they sleep in vast master bedrooms, bathe in luxurious master bathrooms, and are quite happy to have them featured in various magazines commemorating the vanity with which they surround themselves.

In a recent issue of Architectural Digest, a huge yacht was featured. It had a “master suite”.
