Romans 8:28  “And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose.”

Many thought Christianity would disappear when Jesus died on the cross.  Did His painful death show that “all things work together for good?”

We may consider that when Saints Peter and Paul were crucified, the Catholic Church might have been erased.  Did their agonizing deaths show that “all things work together for good“?

Every Christian martyr has chosen to sacrifice his life for Christ’s truth.  The Roman Catholic Church has been strengthened by each martyr.  In that sense, Catholics realize that even the most agonizing death is an example proving that “all things work together for good“.

It is harder to understand the reading when we apply it to what’s going on around us in our daily lives.

How do child molesters possibly show that “all things work together for good“?

How can the destruction of thousands of unborn babies every day by abortionists be conceived to be an example that “all things work together for good“?

We who are called to believe cannot reject Romans 8:28.  We have to somehow makes sense of:  “And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to His purpose.”

Some say:  “I believe that passage.  I do not fully understand it, but it is in the Bible, The Church has approved it,  so I believe it.”

Others will say, “It is morally repellant to say of abortionists, destroying thousands of babies every day, “all things work together for good”.

A reply:  “The Loving Programmer has given every human program free will.  For His gift to be real, every human program has to truly be free.  Every hurtful thing that is chosen to be done proves that The Loving Programmer has provided us with free will.  If He hadn’t, think how we’d complain.”

Is that why “And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to His purpose.”

At first, It’s hard to understand how “All things work together for good”.  Then, we move ahead.  If we are blessed, we understand that best way to control free will is by belief in and obedience to He Who provided us with it.
