People Are Not Equal. Why Should Their Votes Be?

People in what they think are Democracies believe in “One Man, One Vote”.   They will, without any reflection, think that to be the basis for a “good system”.  Many are fond of saying things like:  “Democracy may not be the best system, but it’s the best that’s ever been tried.”  Such sentiments are followed by a lot of serious head-nodding.

Democracy does play to our vanity and self-importance.   Most of us are vain enough to enjoy believing we have some sort of “input”  as to how we are governed.  Most of us believe we live in a system ruled by popular votes.

Amazingly, few question the basic, unspoken premise of modern Democracies:  “A dumb crook’s vote should count just as much as the vote of a  smarter, more honest person.”

Why should the vote of a drug-addled crook count as much as a hard-working, honest person’s ballot choice?  It should not.  The failure to purge  voting rolls of  those who lie to, and take from, their neighbors  is all the proof necessary that the desire for equality often makes Democracy flawed at its core.
