“My burden is light.”, in every sense of the Word.

Today’s Reading is from Matthew, 11:28-30.  The final line, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” is typical of this site’s “take it literally whenever you can”  approach to Church and Scripture.

Jesus said:
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

When we read the last line, we picture a perfectly fitting yoke that is made by Heavenly craftsmen to fit us perfectly.  The yoke is a power-transfer device.  It allows us to get more done, more easily and more quickly.   It is more than a perfectly-fitting ox yoke device.  It harnesses the mind to God.  That’s how we get more done.  That’s how we live up to our capacity.  We begin by asking God to connect us to Him.  Then, we get to work, doing His work as we do our own.

The final phrase, “and my burden is light” means not only that our burden, with His yoke, is easily carried, but also that it is actually “light”.  We carry God’s light into the darkness around us.  Since “My yoke is easy”, then “My burden is light.”, in every sense of the Word.
