Mary, Mother of God is The Most Important Being This Side of The Trinity

Many converts to Catholicism do not, and are not, given reasons to understand the importance of The Blessed Mother.  By some happy intervention, a Very Catholic reader of these columns and books  let me know about “The City of God”

It is a four volume set of books written in the mid-1600s by Sister Mary of Agreda, of whom I had not heard.  She recommended it very highly. Taking the suggestion as a command, I ordered the book from a convent.  “It’s our last set.”, I was informed.  When it arrived, I set in on a bookshelf, where it sat for a few weeks.  Then, I was driven to take it home and began reading.  Almost 700 pages into it, one reaches a detailed discussion of The Incarnation.  That is preceded by a very exacting biography describing Mary’s family, birth, education, and growing closeness to God.

The book was not so much written by Sister Mary of Agreda as transcribed by her from conversations she had with Mary.  At one time, I would have thought myself superior to such things.  Now, I realize how fortunate one is to have the opportunity to read words that came from Mary, Herself.

Frankly, it was so new to me, and so powerful, that it was impossible to read more than a few pages at a time.  It has a “ring of truth” that’s undeniable.  Most of us do not even begin to understand how holy and beloved Mary had to be to have God within Her.  She was, and is, the most important Being in Creation. Her holiness resulted in her having been given more power than any being outside The Holy Trinity.  In a phrase, “She runs things.”  Other things have declined in importance in my mind, and should in every mind. Time on earth could not be better spent than in praising Her.
